August 2013.

Close to Milan you can find a couple of mountain passes highly regarded by Italian motorcyclists: the Stelvio pass (2758 m.) and the San Marco pass (1992 m.).
Neither you are compelled to attack them on the saddle of a motorbike, if you feel brave and fit enough you can use a bicycle… or you can use a car, provided it’s the right one.
To fully enjoy your driving, leave behind heavy SUV and people carrier, though also the modern high performance car and large supercars may cause embarrassment on such narrow roads.
Even the lightweight Seven, with it’s diminutive dimensions, had some difficulties on the Stelvio, when crossing other vehicles; no problem on the San Marco roads, less crowded and somewhat larger.
On these latter roads, the Caterham finally found its rhythm, frantic, mesmerizing, involving.
In the end, unless you are really unable to use a motorcycle (still the best bet to dial with the traffic around Morbegno), at least select a car capable of cheering you up on the hairpins.

Caterham Roadsport 120 - 2011/2013… and then some - part 2 of 2.

Q: Has this Seven ownership resulted in a positive experience?

A: Yes, because despite all of the issues the car is fantastic.
Each time you drive it you are facing a special event and you know you are a lucky bastard just for the looks you get on the road.
Then you think about all the people who are staring and you realize most of them are just intrigued by the unusual shape of the car, they have no idea about how good it is to drive.
So you feel doubly privileged, because the aspect of the car is the last of it's charms, believe me.
This is not a car for posers, there are many others options which are much more comfortable if you want that, this is a car that has to be driven hard.
Good manners in a car like this, just like in bed, are going to spoil all the fun.
I was in Premana for work yesterday, and I fully enjoyed each of the 110 km on the road.
The pictures enclosed where taken up in the mountains and in Lecco on the way back; these are rare pictures because I bet you haven't seen many Sevens with the hood up.
It is called the all-weather equipment, and it's considered an optional on this car: it comprises windshield, wipers, doors and hood.
If you throw in also the heater (that too an optional), the Seven makes for a plausible winter car, though I really look forward to take the hood off and enjoy the summer.

Q: Is it possible to live with a Caterham as your only car?

A: It is possible only if you are brave and determined enough, and if you can count on another vehicle, a motorbike will suffice, just to fill in the gaps when the Caterham will let you down.

Q: Would I recommend the Seven to other people?

A: NO, if you are really interested in the Seven you will just know it, if you are in doubt it's not the car for you.
Suggesting such a car would be stupid because very few people share my same priorities and the Seven is tailored for these few enthusiasts.
This is no Porsche and will not try to make everybody happy!
It's the no compromise machine, from 1957.

Caterham Roadsport 120 - 2011/2013… and then some - part 1 of 2

I'm currently over the end of the second year of ownership of the Caterham, and it's time to draw some conclusions.
Let's start with the issues I had.
Hailstorm is not a problem you can hold against the car itself, but it's interesting to know about the possible effect it can have on such a lightweight bodywork.
Actually I was expecting the damage on the thin aluminum bonnet, but I was amazed about the delicacy of the prg mudguard.
Something else to ponder about is the unpainted aluminum: I really like the worn effect it delivers, but it is a very delicate surface to deal with, a nightmare for how it gets permanently stained and easily scratched.
It is also impossible to repair for small bumps, because it cannot be effectively reshaped and filled in like any surface intended to be painted.
In my case the entire bonnet had to be replaced, and the full insurance coverage was welcome.

The first real breakdown has occurred in a roundabout, as I stopped to let a pedestrian through, the clutch pedal went all the way down, but didn't come up again and the car stalled.
Fortunately the lightness of the thing means you can easily push it out of the way without any help and park it just like a motorbike in the nearest place available.
The problem was an easy fix, just a broken split cotter pin in the mechanism to disengage the clutch, but I still Had to call for the recovery truck.

The first lesson to learn with a Caterham is to have an insurance policy that cover the recovery of the car, because you will need it, believe me!

The second issue was about the cooling system, it started with a leak from one of the tubes connected to the power plant, but then developed in a faulty radiator.
The repair was performed under warranty, albeit the procedure was long and complicated.
The faulty radiator had to be unjointed, was shipped to the UK to prove the defect, Caterham saw the part was indeed broken and decided to change it, but they had no spare part available in the storehouse, so they had to order it.
When the new radiator arrived in Caterham, it still had to be modified in order to be installed in the car, and was then shipped back to Italy.
In the end, the car was stuck for two month in the workshop, and I had to borrow my green MX5 back from my wife.

So the second lesson to learn is to always consider a backup plan, you cannot rely solely on this type of car!

The third issue happened one Friday, the night dedicated to movies, in the parking of the cinema, after the last projection: the car just wouldn't start.
Apparently, this time, I had touched the wrong wire with my foot whilst getting into the car.
I send my friends home with their own cars and patiently waited for the recovery truck.
I was taken at the night deposit and had to walk all the way back home.
Fortunately I enjoy walking, because it took me 3,5 hours.

Third lesson: always wear comfortable shoes and dress accordingly to the weather forecast, you might need to walk.

Now let me expand on the shoes concept, as it is a fundamental accessory for the enjoyment of the Seven and for safety's sake.
The pedal bay on a Caterham is really narrow and, if you pretend to press only one pedal at the time, you should have the smallest possible feet (mine are size 42) and some sole-less shoe tightly wrapped around them.
Your entire body size is important to live with this car, in fact it helps if you share the same general measurements with the creator Colin Chapman, particularly if you have opted for the classic S3 chassis.
I'm exactly 1,75 m. And about 73 kg. which seems to work fine.
Anything more and you should go for the bigger SV chassis.
And even if you are to small the trick is not going to work, my petite wife never managed to drive the Seven because the seat will not advance enough for her feet to reach the pedals, unless you are prepared to make some serious mechanical changes.

The forth issue was when the temperature gauge popped out of the dashboard: the plastic of the barrel simply cracked away, but don't ask me why.
The italian importer never even bothered to reply to my mail, maybe because he thinks that the warranty only covers the first year (but actually the European law says two, thus if you want to sell your product on the continent, that is the law you'll have to accept).
So I send the same mail directly to the Caterham firm in the UK and had an immediate and professional reply.
They asked for the chassis number and the day after I received the parcel containing the new instrument.
Well done Caterham in the person of James Gibson: this is exactly the after sale service such a special car really deserves!

Why's every body touching my car?

I don't clean zeta frequently, but not because I want a rat car.
I deliberately keep the Harley davidson dirty for month if not years, because it is supposed to be a rat bike, but on the Caterham I like just a hint of "patina": the right amount of dirt, wear and tear.
Also, it is not such a simple car to clean, you have to use a sponge, a bucket of water, and work on small sections at a time, all by hand.
This rare washing procedure, gives me the chance to assess a peculiar tendency: people like to touch my car.
I've pictured some fingerprints visible on the car right now, just for reference.
Some people need to put a finger on zeta whilst they have their picture taken (I've witnessed a pretty girl doing that), but mostly I find the marks of greasy fingers when I go back to the parked car.
I'm not so concerned about this behavior, because it is not damaging the car in any way, but I find the thing intriguing.
I wonder if the same thing happens to other flashy cars, the really expensive ones like Ferrari or Lamborghini, not that you will ever notice as they are always so clean and spotless.
But I like to believe it is a reaction limited to this particular type of car, and the question is why?
For the posing girl it might have been the necessity to show the prospective, to add a scale to the picture, or maybe to demonstrate the image was not photoshopped but a real situation.
It is the "I've been there" topic you see on holidays pics, near monuments or exotic places, where you need to feel part of the scenery.
Like when you take a picture with the condescending VIP, as a substitute to an autograph.
Though the majority of people are happy to be pictured near zeta, some will need the reassurance of the actual contact with such an unusual car, to be sure it is real.
Bear in mind the Caterham is very rare in Italy, more than Ferrari and Lamborghini, but there is more... you don't touch the expensive car because it is intimidating, out of reach; but you are enticed to the Caterham because it is a happy and agreeable car.
It doesn't arouse envy, just sympathy.
90% of the buyers of Porsche's sportscars (let alone the others products) tend to be focusing on showing off their wealth more than having a real interest in one of the best cars available on the market, and this generate jealousy in all the people who can't afford it.
But if you buy a Caterham, you must have a good sense of humor, and you must be really interested in the car itself if you are prepared to put up with all the discomforts.
Envious vandals seems to concentrate on expensive cars they know well, the common backdrop that seems artfully displayed to emphasize the shortcomings in their lives.
But a car they have never considered buying, they might not be aware of altogether and which is not really out of their reach but only out of their radar, is not going to be perceived as a threat.
That's why in a couple of years ownership the Caterham suffered only two minor assaults with no damages involved: an empty packet of cigarettes thrown in the open cockpit, and some publicity material left on the bonnet; let's hope it will go on like this.

Mazda MX5 Miata 1.6 - 1992 and 1995

I've never had big expenses in my life, neither much money to play with though.
So which is the best drivers car you can buy on a tight budget?
My reply to this question has always been the same: the Mazda MX5 (Miata in some countries).
In the 80ties, when all over the world leading car manufacturers seemed to shy away from the reasonably priced open top sportscar, Mazda perceived a business opportunity.
Particularly in the USA, this kind of car was deemed as dangerous in case of a roll-over and many producers, instead of finding a solution, preferred to dismiss the genre altogether, or to confine it to their national customer base.
Arguable the stronger market for this sort of cars (both in volumes and in sheer number of models on offer) was the British, maybe for the genuine passion of the people but surely not for the weather!
It was a niche market, but well represented right from back in the 50ties and 60ties: think of Lotus, the various Triumph Spitfire and TR's, Morgan, MG and so on...
By choosing not to update their models, these brands lost the valuable American market.
Mazda was wise enough to grab the opportunity, and remained for some years the only cheap spider on the global market, inducing all the other manufacturers to follow the lead (without the hundred of thousand MX5 sold, we would have never seen all those Z3, SLK, TT, MGF, Barchetta etc.)
And "cheap" doesn't mean cheesy.
Many books have been written on the MX5 genesis, suffice to say Mazda in the late 80ties had a huge budget to dispose of, and was determined to give birth to the ideal light weight sportscar.
The share of the market was indeed small, but fundamental to draw attention on the brand itself and on the rest of the model range.
Two separate teams worked on the first layout of the car, one in Japan and one in the USA.
The American team came out with the best idea, and went on delivering a distillation of the very best traits from every iconic sportscar of the past.
The main inspiration source was the original Lotus Elan, for the classic and balanced front motor and rear traction layout and for the overall styling (comprising the mandatory pop up headlights).
The wheels design was inspired by the Mini, the aspect of the motor bay was taken from the Alfa Romeo (though starting from a more prosaic, off the shelf Mazda powerplant), the sound was tuned after the BMW M1...
The whole experience of driving the car was under scrutiny, to give just the right feeling, the weight of the commands, the amount of information available from the instruments and filtering trough the steering wheel, all was tuned to deliver the sense of "oneness between horse and rider" (Jinba ittai).
The end result of all this care, like so many other nipponian products, is a perfect car, dependable, very enjoyable and sapiently blended like a good scotch whisky, but missing that hint of character to make it truly great: the perfect blend easily dilutes the fun.
The strive for quality typical of japanese culture always falls short on delivering the thrills effortlessly oozing from many of Italian and British products (we might say European, with some reservations about Germany).
If you search for a bike or a car to trash on a track on regular bases, you better select one from Japan; if you search for the final mechanical friend with a soul, the vehicle of your wet dreams, and you are a bit of a fetishist, you should turn to quirky Italians or kinky British: but don't cry when you are left on the roadside.
Let's compare the Kawasaki W650 and the Mazda MX5, both are examples of British updated and improved classic icons, so why they come from the other side of the world? Because only Japanese are so fond of traditions (not only theirs) to stubbornly work towards a result, forgetting about fantasies, revolutions or egotistic whims.
When Lotus made the new Elan, and Triumph made the new Bonneville, they were excellent in their own way, but far apart from the respective ancestors: if the purpose was to dust off and refresh the old recipe, the japanese were more successful!

I bought my first MX5 in 2003, an early Mk1 1992, 1.6, 116 HP, red.
I liked it so much I wanted to preserve it, maybe restore it in the future.
In 2006 I was offered another one at a bargain price, green, still an Mk1, 1.6 model from 1995: but this time it was the underpowered 90 HP without the LSD.
It was in very good conditions (a part from the paint) and I saw the chance to keep the red one sound for a future restoration and still use the green one for every day duties.
With the arrival of the Caterham in 2011, the green MX5 has become the second car of my wife, it is still going strong with 100.000 miles on the clock, and still playing the role of a workhorse, this time to preserve the main beloved car of my wife, a Copen.
The red MX5 is still waiting for the future restoration in the back of the Bramley's garage, but I'm not seeing this happening anyway soon.
I honestly can't say I miss it, having the Caterham to play with, but I enjoy driving the green one of my wife from time to time, and I am happy to know my first real sportscar, my old friend, is still available for the future.
To any young driver willing to learn and enjoy 100% of his car, I suggest to forget all the hot hatch hype, and get a hold of a well worn MX5, either an Mk1 (original 1.6 from 1990 to 1994, or later 1.8) or the Mk2.5 (2002 - 2006, the best of the recent bunch).
You will experience real junior sportscar dynamics for a small price and at reasonable speeds, and you will be punished much, much before you get in real deep shit.
Driving aids are only going to fool you into thinking you are a good driver until their dominion is finally breached, and then it is too late: I still prefer tangible limits to suit my developing skills as a driver, and frequent but not so severe punishments to remind me where I belong.
Thank you Mazda, 8 years of coaching from your excellent MX5 has been priceless before stepping up to the Caterham.
And what about the Caterham, is it at all blended?
Nope, it is more of a single malt whisky, double cask matured for some 55 years, bottled at the natural distillery strength, straight from the wood... and this, for me, makes all the difference!
