I don't clean zeta frequently, but not because I want a rat car.
I deliberately keep the Harley davidson dirty for month if not years, because it is supposed to be a rat bike, but on the Caterham I like just a hint of "patina": the right amount of dirt, wear and tear.
Also, it is not such a simple car to clean, you have to use a sponge, a bucket of water, and work on small sections at a time, all by hand.
This rare washing procedure, gives me the chance to assess a peculiar tendency: people like to touch my car.
I've pictured some fingerprints visible on the car right now, just for reference.
Some people need to put a finger on zeta whilst they have their picture taken (I've witnessed a pretty girl doing that), but mostly I find the marks of greasy fingers when I go back to the parked car.
I'm not so concerned about this behavior, because it is not damaging the car in any way, but I find the thing intriguing.
I wonder if the same thing happens to other flashy cars, the really expensive ones like Ferrari or Lamborghini, not that you will ever notice as they are always so clean and spotless.
But I like to believe it is a reaction limited to this particular type of car, and the question is why?
For the posing girl it might have been the necessity to show the prospective, to add a scale to the picture, or maybe to demonstrate the image was not photoshopped but a real situation.
It is the "I've been there" topic you see on holidays pics, near monuments or exotic places, where you need to feel part of the scenery.
Like when you take a picture with the condescending VIP, as a substitute to an autograph.
Though the majority of people are happy to be pictured near zeta, some will need the reassurance of the actual contact with such an unusual car, to be sure it is real.
Bear in mind the Caterham is very rare in Italy, more than Ferrari and Lamborghini, but there is more... you don't touch the expensive car because it is intimidating, out of reach; but you are enticed to the Caterham because it is a happy and agreeable car.
It doesn't arouse envy, just sympathy.
90% of the buyers of Porsche's sportscars (let alone the others products) tend to be focusing on showing off their wealth more than having a real interest in one of the best cars available on the market, and this generate jealousy in all the people who can't afford it.
But if you buy a Caterham, you must have a good sense of humor, and you must be really interested in the car itself if you are prepared to put up with all the discomforts.
Envious vandals seems to concentrate on expensive cars they know well, the common backdrop that seems artfully displayed to emphasize the shortcomings in their lives.
But a car they have never considered buying, they might not be aware of altogether and which is not really out of their reach but only out of their radar, is not going to be perceived as a threat.
That's why in a couple of years ownership the Caterham suffered only two minor assaults with no damages involved: an empty packet of cigarettes thrown in the open cockpit, and some publicity material left on the bonnet; let's hope it will go on like this.
Non lavo zeta sovente, ma non perchè io voglia una rat car.
La Harley Davidson la lascio sporca di proposito, perche quella è previsto che sia una rat bike, ma sulla Caterham voglio solo un po' di "patina": il giusto quantitativo di sporcizia e usura.
A voler essere sincero, non è neanche troppo facile da pulire, con secchio e spugna, un pezzo alla volta e tutto a mano.
Questi rari lavaggi mi consentono di riscontrare una strana tendenza: le persone mettono le mani addosso alla mia macchina.
Ho fotografato qualcuna delle impronte visibili in questo preciso momento, giusto per far capire cosa intendo.
Qualcuno si appoggia delicatamente mentre si fa immortalare da un amico (ho visto farlo personalmente ad una bella ragazzina), ma di solito scopro le tracce delle dita unte solo quando ritorno alla macchina parcheggiata.
Non mi preoccupa questo atteggiamento, semplicemente perchè non provoca alcun danno all'auto, ma mi incuriosisce.
Mi chiedo se capiti la stessa cosa ai proprietari di altre auto appariscenti, quelle veramente costose come Ferrari o Lamborghini, non sarebbe visibile comunque, dato che sono sempre perfettamente pulite e sterilizzate.
Diciamo che mi piace pensare che sia una prerogativa riservata a determinati tipi di auto, ma la domanda è perchè?
La fanciulla in posa poteva essere alla ricerca della giusta prospettiva, per stabilire la scala dei rispettivi elementi, oppure per dimostrare che l'immagine non era elaborata con Photoshop ma frutto di una situazione reale e tangibile.
Quella che si potrebbe definire la sindrome da "ci sono stato veramente" che ci coglie in vacanza, vicino a monumenti e paesaggi esotici, che ci fa sentire parte della scena.
Come quando ci si fa fotografare in compagnia del VIP consenziente, quale surrogato dell'autografo.
Anche se la maggior parte delle persone si accontenta di essere ripreso vicino a zeta, qualcuno sente il bisogno di questo contatto rassicurante con il mezzo, come per assicurarsi della sua concretezza.
Ricordate che le Caterham sono molto rare in Italia, più delle Ferrari e delle Lamborghini, ma c'è qualcora di più... non toccheresti un'auto molto costosa, perchè ti intimidisce, sembra irraggiungibile; ma sei stregato dalla Caterham perchè è un'auto gioiosa e accettabile.
Non suscita invidia, solo simpatia.
Un buon 90% delle Porsche sportive (non parliamo neanche delle altre) sono acquistate da persone più interessate ad ostentare la propria ricchezza che da veri ammiratori di una delle migliori auto in circolazione; questo rende gelosi coloro che non possono permettersi lo stesso lusso.
Ma se acquisti una Caterham, ti viengono automaticamente riconosciuti un certo senso dell'umorismo e un genuino interesse nel mezzo in se stesso, visto che sei disposto ad accettarene le relative scomodità.
I vandali invidiosi sembrano concentrarsi sulle auto molto costose, che conoscono bene, classico fondale sul palcoscenico della loro vita, che sembra messo lì apposta per evidenziare i loro fallimenti personali.
Ma un'auto che non hanno mai sognato di acquistare, che magari non conoscono neppure, che non è affatto al di fuori della loro portata ma proprio dei loro desideri, non sarà percepita come un insulto.
Per questa ragione, nei quasi due anni passati con la Caterham, ho subito solo due insignificanti attacchi, ma senza danno alcuno: un pacchetto di sigarette vuoto lanciato nell'abitacolo ed una pila di pubblicità abbandonata sul cofano; speriamo di andare avanti così.
